Last weekend, we went to London to see “Hamilton”, and it was off the charts good!
So good, that I will even venture to say the best musical produced in my lifetime, and we all know there have been some great ones.
The director, Lin-Manuel Miranda, has taken theatre to a different level with his “drop the mic” witty script. The brilliant cast rockets through the acts combining hip-hop, rap and R&B in a seamless roller coaster that rocks your soul. It’s really that good.
“How does a bastard, orphan, son of a whore, and a Scotsman, dropped in the middle of a forgotten spot in the Caribbean by providence, impoverished, in squalor, grow up to be a hero and a scholar?”
That is the question that the ethnically diverse cast of Hamilton will provide in this remarkable production.
The show is a celebration of immigrants. A tribute to one of America’s founding Fathers who is often footnoted instead of being hailed for his contributions to his country which include championing the constitution and establishing the first National Bank of America.
Back to the talented cast. Their powerful voices will astonish you. Rachelle Ann Go, who plays Eliza, the wife of Hamilton, literally vibrates the theatre with her incredible voice. Their ability to seamlessly jump between musical genres will entertain you and leave you wanting more. The acting will move you. Spoiler: I actually cried at one point in the second scene. And the King of France (George III), played by Michael Jibson, will make you laugh as he sings, “You’ll be Back”, and Dat dat da ya das around the stage.
Plus the venue is stunning. The Victoria Palace Theatre has recently been refurbished and is simply beautiful. Still not convinced? Well then you’ll have to see it for yourself and thank me later! Oh, and take the kids. My three loved it. Even the 10-year-old, who is not easy to contain, on any 2.5-hour occasion. What was his only criticism? He would’ve liked to see more of the King. 😉
